First introduction in Eastern Armenian. Part 1. - LSA #1
Learn essential Eastern Armenian vocabulary used to introduce yourself when you’re getting acquainted with people.

I am Gohar Martirosyan and this is Episode #1 where I will give you some useful Eastern Armenian vocabulary to introduce yourself when you’re getting acquainted with people. The important words in this series are nicely wrapped into several situational dialogs so that you know exactly how to use them. We keep each episode short not to overload you with too many new words at a time. I’m going to make pauses after the Armenian words. Try to repeat after me. Let’s go! PHRASES First introduction Ծանոթություն [tsanotutyun]
Here are several most common phrases used for introduction. What’s your name? Անունդ ի՞նչ է: [anunəd inch e] This is a more informal way. And the formal one will be: Ձեր անունն ի՞նչ է: [dzer anunn inch e] From here on I will be mentioning the informal version of the phrase first and then the formal one. Where are you from? Որտեղի՞ց ես: [vorteghic es] Որտեղի՞ց եք: [vorteghic eq] Nice to meet you. Հաճելի է ծանոթանալ: [hacheli e tsanotanal]
DIALOG
With this simple phrases we can make a short introduction dialog in Armenian. — Hi! What’s your name? Բարև: Անունդ ի՞նչ է: [barev. anunəd inch e] / Բարև ձեզ: Ձեր անունն ի՞նչ է: [barev dzez. Dzer anunn inch e] — Mariam. What’s yours? Մարիամ: Իսկ քո՞նը: [mariam isk qonə] / Իսկ ձե՞րը: [isk dzere] — Ara. Where are you from, Mariam? Արա: Որտեղի՞ց ես, Մարիամ: [ara vorteghic es mariam] / Որտեղի՞ց եք, Մարիամ: [vorteghic eq mariam] — I’m from the US. And you? Ես Միացյալ Նահանգներից եմ, իսկ դու՞: [yes miatsyal nahangneric em isk du] / Ես Միացյալ Նահանգներից եմ, իսկ դու՞ք: [yes miatsyal nahangneric em isk duq] — I’m from Armenia. Nice to meet you, Mariam. Ես Հայաստանից եմ: Հաճելի է ծանոթանալ, Մարիամ: [yes hayastanic em hacheli e tsanotanal] — Nice to meet you. Փոխադարձ: [pokhadardz]
NEW WORDS
Let’s see what new new words and expressions we’ve learned in this Episode. first introduction - ծանոթություն [tsanotutyun] Hi - բարև [barev] what - ի՞նչ [inch] You - դու, դուք [du, duq] your - քո, ձեր [qo, dzer] name - անուն [anun] where - որտեղ [vortegh] nice, pleasant - հաճելի [hacheli] meet, get acquainted with - ծանոթանալ [tsanotanal] mutual - փոխադարձ [pokhadardz] (we use this word which actually means ‘mutually’ instead of ‘nice to meet you “Հաճելի է ծանոթանալ” [hacheli e tsanotanal] , when replying to someone who already told us that same phrase).
HOMEWORK
In order to help you to memorise the words and expressions you’ve just learned let me give you some homework.
If you have someone who speaks or is also learning Armenian, try to stage a short introduction dialog with them using the expressions you’ve learned from this episode. If you have noone to help just try to make an introduction text about yourself.
